Anti-Circus Campaign

Circo Di Praga came to Hania and performances took place 24th Dec. 2006 - 15th Jan. 2007. After the intervention of Chrysalis, the Municipality of Hania with the help of the local police sued the circus for performing without the appropriate permission and license.

Then, the public veterinarian paid the circus a visit to inspect animal health and welfare issues. There was nothing they could actually prosecute for but the circus was forced to sign a document stating that according to the new law 1739/2005 starting in Jan. 07' is obliged to have all animals microchipped and registered from the country of origin before being allowed to enter Greece again.

Unfortunately, this did not stop the circus from performing but we have time to prepare for their coming to other cities of the island. Please contact us to see how you can make a difference!

Stop Circus Suffering is the first campaign Chrysalis has undertaken in cooperation always with Greek Animal Welfare Fund and Animal Defenders International.

The campaign began officially on March 27^th with the first press conference in Greece taking place in Heraklion, Crete. (photos). The conference faced a great success, as did the ones that followed on the mainland, with local and national coverage from newspapers, TV station, Radio and magazines.

It aims initially at achieving local bans, mainly targeting the larger cities where circuses spend most of the show time. However, politicians change and bans may be lifted so the campaigns main aim is to educate the people and mostly the children regarding the animal suffering behind the circuses’ bright lights and happy faces.

So far, two bans have been achieved on the island of Crete but many more must follow. Help is needed not only in the form of donations but also in manpower so that we may have a louder and more determined voice.

A big thank you to the Municipalities of Malia and Heraklion for taking a step in the correct direction towards a more civilized and humane society.

Η εκστρατεία Ας βάλουμε Τέλος στα Μαρτύρια των Ζώων του Τσίρκου, είναι η πρώτη εκστρατεία του σωματείου Χρυσαλίς και διεξάγεται σε συνεργασία με το Ελληνικό Ταμείο Μέριμνας Ζώων και την διεθνή οργάνωση Υπερασπιστές των Ζώων.

Η έναρξη της εκστρατείας έγινε στις 27 Μαρτίου με το πρώτο Συνέδριο Τύπου στην Ελλάδα που έλαβε χώρα στο Ηράκλειο Κρήτης και σημείωσε τεράστια επιτυχία, όπως έγινε και στα επόμενα που ακολούθησαν σε άλλα μέρη της χώρας. Το θέμα είχε κάλυψη όχι μόνο απο τοπικά κανάλια, τύπο και ράδιο αλλά και απο εθνικά δύκτια.

Η προσοχή στρέφεται κυρίως στην επίτευξη απαγορεύσεων των τσίρκων, ιδίως σε μεγάλες πόλεις όπου τα τσίρκο μένουν για πολλές παραστάσεις. Παρόλα αυτά, οι πολιτική σκηνή αλλάζει και το ίδιο εύκολα μπορούν να αλλάξουν οι απαγορεύσεις, γι’αυτό ο κύριος σκοπός της εκστρατείας είναι η σωστή διαπαιδαγώγηση, κυρίως των παιδιών, στο θέμα του βασανισμού των ζώων που κρύβεται πίσω απο τα λαμπερά φώτα και τα χαρούμενα πρόσωπα του τσίρκου.

Μέχρι τώρα δύο απαγορεύσεις έχουν επιτευχθεί όμως χρειαζόμαστε και την βοήθειά σας, όχι μόνο σε μορφή δωρεών αλλά και σε πρακτική βοήθεια για να έχουμε μία δυνατότερη και πιο επίμονη φωνή που θα ακουστεί.
